Want to clearly get off the beaten path on your next trip to Thailand? As a big fan of the eastern region of the kingdom, called Issan (or e-san, also known as the rice bowl of the country), I offer you a 3-day discovery in the Udon Thani area, by the Mekong River with Laos in the background.
The departure can also be from Chiang Mai or Udon Thani (about a 1-hour flight) and can easily be included in your overall trip around the country. You can start from Bangkok, visit Issan, and then continue your journey to Chiang Mai.
By default, we offer a night train from Bangkok to Nong Khai for a 100% authentic experience that is also more eco-friendly, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the region at dawn.
Enjoy a truly authentic experience staying in a guesthouse, an exceptional opportunity to discover Issan culture and, more broadly, Thai culture—far from the usual tourist sites.
Day Before Departure at 8 PM from Bangkok train station, in second-class sleeper for an overnight train.
Day 1 Wake up early in the morning to beautiful Issan landscapes passing by at the gentle pace of your train. Arrive in Nong Khai, on the border with Laos and along the Mekong River. Breakfast. Visit Wat Po Chai temple. Visit Sala Keoku, with its statues from another era and impressive heights. Stop at the Laos-Thailand Friendship Bridge. Visit Wat Pa That Suea temple and its suspended glass bridge (Sky Walk). Overnight stay at a small resort by the Mekong, with views of Laos.
Day 2 Early departure for a short hike in nature up to a magnificent mountain viewpoint. Then, get transported in a local motorized vehicle used in the fields and explore the region in a unique and fun way. Stop for lunch (meal included): enjoy a river, waterfall, and a meal cooked in bamboo (even the cups and utensils are made from bamboo). Evening at the guesthouse with many activities and a discovery of Thai culture, especially Issan culture (meal included).
Day 3 Breakfast included at the homestay. Early morning visit to a beautiful temple with a blue roof, perched on top of a hill, still untouched by mass tourism: Wat Pa Phu Khon. Return by car or minivan to Udon Thani. Stop at Phra Bat National and Historical Park. Short break by the Udon Thani lake to take photos with their huge yellow plastic duck sitting in the middle. Drop-off in the late afternoon at the place of your choice in town or at the airport.
